What is a new game plus?

Like many other Japanese RPGs before it, Fire Emblem Three Houses contains a New Game Plus that is unlocked after you’ve completed the game once, no matter which route in the story you choose. Choose an empty save slot to put the New Game Plus in and you’ll have a Sothis icon appear next to your new save file. Changes and renown

When you begin your New Game Plus, you’ll be able to choose a different gender for your main character and also have access to choose a new difficulty. However, Fire Emblem Three Houses New Game Plus introduces a new feature within the game: a notebook that can be found at Byleth’s desk after completing a few missions during the campaign. The notebook shows your Renown, a new type of in-game currency that you achieve when you complete missions during your school week. Renown is basically Fire Emblem Three Houses New Game Plus’s main feature, as it can allow you to purchase things that will allow the playthrough to either go quicker or unlock features you couldn’t in your last playthrough. What’s great is that your Renown will continue to accumulate, even if you start a new game in another save file.

Renown in Fire Emblem Three Houses New Game Plus can be used to increase Byleth’s teacher level so that you’ll be able to perform more tasks in a day and build your relationships more than you would have at the beginning of your first playthrough. If you’ve maxed out your support level with characters in another playthrough and would want them to be a part of your party in the New Game Plus, you’ll be able to spend your renown to up their relationship towards Byleth and you can recruit them earlier in the game. However, this doesn’t apply to characters that you haven’t built relationships with, so you may still need to host tea parties and have meals with those students so that you can access them in another New Game Plus.

The Fire Emblem Three Houses New Game Plus also provides you the ability to get your units’ weapon skills back up to where they were at the end of your last playthrough. As with relationships, if you haven’t worked on certain aspects or skills in your units, you’ll need to grind to increase their levels. For those who want to get through their playthrough quicker, this will allow their battles to be over in seconds. For those who want to have their units match their difficulty level, this can make sure that you’re not floundering in mock battles where perma-death is turned on. Spend your Renown on maxing out your units’ stats in order to breeze through your playthrough or give yourself an extra edge if you chose Maddening mode as your difficulty.

Play dress up!

Fire Emblem Three Houses New Game Plus also introduces cosmetic changes to the characters that you have recruited, without you having to spend Renown. You can customize Byleth’s outfit, giving them glasses or having them dress in a uniform, but you can also update your students’ uniforms and cosmetics. Hate that the character is wearing a hat? You can remove it! Want to see what your class would look like in gym uniforms? Now you can! There are even some options to update character hairstyles, depending on the student, of course. The cosmetics also allow you to change your students’ appearances to that of their time-skip counterparts, which can provide some interesting cutscenes.

Replayability without measure

Even without Fire Emblem Three Houses New Game Plus, the game has a replayability factor that not many others on the Switch can boast. There are four main routes that you can play through, not including the new content introduced in the DLC. With Fire Emblem Three Houses New Game Plus, the number of playthroughs increases, as it can allow you to challenge yourself with higher difficulties and give you new options you wouldn’t have been able to access through your first playthrough. This gives the game a reason to be picked up again and again and to be replayed multiple times in order for players to experience the full extent of the game.
