Kazuichi Soda is a student at Hope’s Peak Academy, known as the Ultimate Mechanic in the Academy’s class 77-B. He is one of the few students to participate in the Despair Island killing game and survive.

As the Ultimate Mechanic, there is nothing that Kazuichi Soda knows more than machines. He’s able to develop new technology and fix up damaged machinery without fail, though it’s not something that happens quickly. Working with any sort of machine seems to make him outgoing and energetic. He mainly tinkers with vehicles, but he does develop several other mechanical inventions to help the students out while they’re on the island. His most recent invention is a motorbike that can reach up to over 500 miles per hour. What’s ironic about Kazuichi’s passion is that although he’s amazing at fixing up vehicles, he has motion sickness whenever he’s in a moving vehicle.

Before the Tragedy, his family owned a bike shop. Although the place never actually sold any bikes, people would come in often to ask for repairs for their older bikes. Kazuichi grew up learning how to fix things and attempted to create new inventions that would help others out. Unfortunately, some of these didn’t work out as planned, including a motorized machine that would put lines on grass for soccer fields; the machine went haywire and zoomed out of the field while it was still painting. Still, the setbacks of Kazuichi Soda’s work don’t seem to affect him if he’s learning something new. In fact, he seems to become more anxious if he’s not able to work on something.

Kazuichi Soda’s dream is to build a rocket ship, one that he can develop that will blow everyone’s expectations out of the water. At the end of the game, he stays on Jabberwock island in hopes to find a way to wake up the students that are comatose.

Personality and Relationships

As soon as his character is introduced, Kazuichi Soda shows his attention to detail and understanding that there’s something not quite right on the island. He notices that the planes that are situated at the island are all missing their engines and realizes that the person who wants them on the island needs them to stay there. However, although he seems to be keeping a cool head, it becomes apparent that he’s more comfortable around machines than people. He constantly blurts out what he’s thinking and this leads to more than a few of his comments directed at the girls in his class being crass and rude.

Kazuichi Soda

When Monokuma announces the game, Kazuichi is absolutely terrified of the prospect of being killed and starts to become paranoid. He shows this cowardice throughout the course of the game, even during the ending to almost comical bounds. Still, he finds ways to incorporate his skills into helping to solve the trials and to assist others. He’s able to fix the elevator in Strawberry House and, when the despair disease affects a few of the students, Kazuichi develops a device that allows the quarantined students to communicate with the rest of their class who are outside of the hospital.

During the killing game, Kazuichi is affected by nearly every death and, sometimes, it takes a bit of time for him to recover from the shock. No matter who the victim is, even if he doesn’t seem to be friends with them, he takes their death seriously. His care for the lives of his classmates may not be evident in his way of speaking, but his actions after each tragedy show that he cares. Even when Gundham Tanaka, a classmate he had several spats with throughout the trials and a possible rival of his love for Sonia, was executed, Kazuichi attempted to make an impassioned speech as a way to lift the class’s spirits.

He has issues regarding trust with the people he calls his friends, having been betrayed by a friend who he let cheat off of a test in middle school. Since then, Kazuichi doesn’t have many true friends that he’s comfortable to call his own. His bond with Hajime Hinata seems to grow the most over the course of the game, calling Hajime his ‘soul friend’ and listening to Hajime’s pleas during the final trial. He also has issues with his self-esteem, having updated his look to the pink-haired, sharp toothed teenager known by class 77-B in hopes of fitting in better. He allowed many people to walk over him while in middle school and hoped that his change in appearance would provide him with more acceptance.

Kazuichi Soda in Danganronpa

Sonia Nevermind is Kazuichi’s crush and one that is very one sided. Kazuichi tends to objectify her in a way that crosses the line of creepy and crude, but it could be his own way of attempting to put his feelings into perspective in a way that his mind makes sense of them. He talks about Sonia’s body a lot akin to how he talks about machinery, which could be his way of attempting to pay her a compliment. In the end, Sonia isn’t interested, but Kazuichi doesn’t seem to let that keep him down.

Another character that Kazuichi eventually bonds with is Nekomaru Nidai, which may be because Nekomaru was converted into a robot as a means to save his life. Kazuichi may have been drawn to Nekomaru because of his changed physicality, but no one knew about him being a robot until after he was killed. After Nekomaru loses in a duel and is killed by Gundham, Kazuichi is able to perform an ‘autopsy’ on the robot in order to learn what happened. He then uses the workable parts of Nekomaru’s machinery in order to create Minimaru, which he gives to Akane Owari.

Former Past

It’s revealed at the end of the game that Kazuichi Soda, along with the other members of class 77-B, were a part of the Ultimate Despair, a group created under Junko Enoshima who attempted to cause more chaos and destruction during the tragedy. This revelation is brought upon through Junko’s AI and Kazuichi is floored by what that means for him and his future. Ultimately, it’s Hajime Hinata that’s able to snap him out of his despair and tell him that he can choose what to make of the future.
