Ibuki Mioda is a student at Hope’s Peak Academy, known as the Ultimate Musician in the Academy’s class 77-B. She took part in the killing game on Dangan Island with the rest of Hope Peak’s class. Although a member of the Light Music Club, her sense of style in both clothing and music lean more towards punk or hard rock and heavy metal. She was originally part of a band, but due to the members’ different tastes in music, she decided to go solo and work on becoming a rock star while the rest of her band stuck with pop music.
As the Ultimate Musician, Ibuki Mioda has the best hearing of any of the students in her class. She utilizes her skills to help determine who the culprit is in the first trial by listening to the conversations that the other students were having during the blackout. Her music skills are referenced throughout her time on the island, with her attempting to come up with new song ideas or performing songs at the music venue. Unfortunately, her taste in music isn’t shared by most of the members of her class and she ends up performing songs that makes them more afraid than in awe.
Ibuki Mioda is one of the few characters in the series that breaks the fourth wall. She also has a few verbal tics, like saying the same thing twice and referring to herself in the third person. Unlike the other characters in her class, she refers to everyone by their first name and in a less formal manner. This changes when she catches the despair disease.
Personality and Relationships
Ibuki Mioda is a bit hyperactive, wearing her heart on her sleeve as she interacts with her classmates throughout the course of the games. She’s very talkative and, if left to her own devices, will go into random tangents that are a bit hard to follow. Still, she’s very open and bold at times, saying what’s on her mind and not mincing words. However, she does show a more subdued side around her friends, showing concern if she notices something isn’t right.
She is a very caring person, having organized a welcome party for Fuyuhiko Kuzuryuu for his recovery and can also host a concert in memory of Mahiru Koizumi, if the player has the Toy Camera before Chapter 2. When bodies begin to appear on the island, she becomes frightened and concerned for her well being as well as those she considers friends. She begins to travel around the island in a group with others, both as a way to dispel her own fear and to also help the others stay safe. During her last free time with Hajime Hinata, she shows a depth to her character regarding what it means to be true to yourself.
When she contracts the despair disease, Ibuki Mioda’s personality changes drastically. Her way of speaking becomes very formal, acting very polite around the same people she would be talking to constantly the day before. Her uniqueness is completely erased when she’s in this state and it’s a stark contrast to see her look to others to tell her what she should be doing instead of going off to do something herself. She becomes extremely gullible as well, which makes her an easy target to be lured away from the hospital at the end of Chapter 3.
It is both implied and outright stated that Ibuki Mioda has an affinity for those of the same gender. She’s shown to call other girls cute and expresses her love towards a few of them whenever they do something she finds adorable or amazing. Outside of this, she seems to express her affection towards other students by calling them her ‘bandmates’ or asking them to join her band.
Ibuki Mioda and Hiyoko Saionji are shown to bond over their tastes in music, as Hiyoko is the only one not put off by Ibuki’s performance when it devolves into a more metal sounding song. She and Ibuki are on good terms, though Hiyoko tends to insult Hiyoko more often than not. Ibuki in turn teases Hiyoko on how quickly the other girl can devolve into tears. Their fates become intertwined in Chapter 3.
Mikan Tsumiki is one of her best friends and Ibuki often teases Mikan because of her shy nature. Because of Ibuki’s outgoing personality, the two are polar opposites of each other, but they seem to honestly enjoy each other’s company. Mikan is a bit scared of Ibuki’s music, but Ibuki teases her often for being so cute. Unfortunately, this friendship is tested when the despair disease infects them both, causing Mikan to perform the ultimate act of betrayal.
Death
Ibuki Mioda wasn’t executed as a suspect during the killing game, but she was a victim. After contracting the despair disease, it transforms her skills into the “Ultimate Gullible”, changing her personality and even her vocabulary to reflect it. She’s lured into the music venue by Mikan, who is also afflicted by the despair disease, and is strangled to death. However, the murder is partially interupted by Hiyoko, who is killed alongside Ibuki. Mikan then stages the murder to look like a hanging, situating Ibuki’s body hanging by a noose and presenting a videotape with the hanging body as evidence.
At the end of Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, Ibuki is shown to be in a comatose state, along with the other deceased members of the class, while those not killed in the game await their awakening.
