Dark Souls 3 is the latest game installment in the Dark Souls series and the trilogy’s final chapter. The action RPG mechanics and the gameplay style are the same as the other two games, including the famous – or infamous, depending on who you ask – Dark Souls’ difficulty. It also features all of the other iconic elements from previous games: use of the bonfire, the Souls system, with a grim and dark ambiance. The enemy AI is much improved, as well as the graphics, without counting the remastered versions. Also, now you max HP goes down when you die for added difficulty (as if the game needed any).

A feature of note in all three games is that at the start of the game, during character creation, you get to choose one item to help you with your journey early on, which are called burial gifts. You can choose to start without it, but it’s basically free loot, so no one does that. Instead, people try to choose the very best alternative (the most efficient game item) because Dark Souls 3 is a very difficult game, any help is very much welcome.

So, what is the best burial gift in Dark Souls 3? Well, Dark Souls 3 doesn’t have a must-pick burial gift, like the Master Key in DS1. For that reason, we made a handy list so that you can decide for yourself which is the best pick. If you don’t care about the whole list and all, ranking the 9 burial gifts from worst to best, and if you just wanted to know right of the bat, we’ll tell you. It’s the Fire Gem. To get the details on why is it the best burial gift in Dark Souls 3, you will have to keep reading.

We will go in this top list from 9 down to 1, which is the best item for us:

9 – Cracked Red Eye Orb

Dark Souls 3 - Cracked Red Eye Orb

The Cracked Red Eye Orb is the worst burial gift in the game. That’s a no brainer. We didn’t even want it to be on our best burial gifts in Dark Souls 3 list. But here it is. Even if you really enjoy PVP: this early game, it’s basically useless. That goes double if you are a new player. Another reason for the Cracked Red Eye Orb being the worst burial gift is that you can only use it 4 times, and that’s it.

Later on you will have the chance to find the not cracked Red Eye Orb, that you can use infinite times. Without spoiling it for new players: you can find the better version of the item when you reach the second bonfire. So, we do not recommend you pick the Cracked Red Eye Orb as your burial gift.

8 – Hidden Blessing

Dark Souls 3 - Hidden Blessing

So, every good fantasy setting needs “mana”, or some sort of numerical stat limiting the use of weapon abilities and magic. In Dark Souls 3, it’s called Focus Points (FP). The Hidden Blessing item is a potion used to replenish FP. We don’t understand how this item can be useful early on, especially compared to other options. Sure, you can have a boost to FP. But just this once. It’s better than Cracked Red Eye Orb, as it can be useful in combat, but only slightly better.

7 – Divine Blessing

Dark Souls 3 - Divine Blessing

Any good fantasy RPG will also feature potions for the player to restore HP. In Dark Souls 3, the Divine Blessing is a “heal over time” potion. It fully restores HP and cures ailments (frostbite, poison and toxic status). Very useful, right? Yes, it is. But not as a burial gift, not when there are better (and permanent) options to choose from. This burial gift will give you 1 potion, so you heal yourself only once. It’s just not worth it early on. Besides, you will find more Divine Blessings on your journey.

6 – Life Ring

Dark Souls 3 - Life Ring

This is where the list of best burial gifts in Dark Souls 3 gets tough: the obviously bad ones are gone. Now we have the Life ring, first of the useful ones. It gives a permanent stat boost, which is a 7% increase to the max HP. Early on, that extra HP can be the difference between life and death, and allow your character to take an extra hit or two while you learn. It also means that you don’t have to level up your HP right away, and invest in another stat.

5 – Sovereignless Soul

Dark Souls 3 - Sovereignless Soul

This burial gift is a one time use, just as the potions above, but this time it’s actually very useful early on. It’s a Soul, and it will grant you 2000 souls. Souls are the currency used in the game to level up, purchase or repair equipment. Having 2000 just like that is great early game. We recommend this one if you don’t want to go farming for souls right away. But there’s that option: pick something else as a burial gift and farm for souls instead.

4 – Black Firebombs

Dark Souls 3 - Black Firebombs

This burial gift is a pack of 5 firebombs that you can use to set enemies on fire for damage over time. It’s not very useful against bosses, but we’re talking about the early game. Except for the Champion Gunfdir: the firebombs can deal great damage against him and may be useful for new players. Other than that, you can sell those or use on the pus to get some early titanite shards. Also, very useful against teleporting dogs and the kings pus of man in the early game. But if you think of choosing this one, well, read our number 1 burial gift before making that choice.

3 – Rusted Gold Coin

Dark Souls 3 - Rusted Gold Coin

Depending on how you play the game, this will be your 1st option for a burial gift. That’s because of the item’s function: you will get increased item discovery, and the drop rates of items from defeated enemies will be better. You get 7 rusted gold coins to use, and then they are gone. 7 times is better than 5 for the firebombs, or just 1 miserable potion. If you are looking for a specific item early on, this is crucial help. If not, the usefulness of this item is debatable. It gets 3rd place because it’s good for greedy players and for beginners to find good loot.

2 – Young White Branch

Dark Souls 3 - Young White Branch

This item is useful because of two things: it will make the life of speed runners a lot easier, and “streamline” the experience for new players. It acts as a chameleon spell, blending the player with the environment, and you can only use it once (not very useful early on anyway, in our opinion). It’s good for a particular reason (Spoiler alert! skip to number 1 if you don’t want to know): This item is not for using, but as an automatic peace offering to the Giant in the Undead Settlement, so he’ll never hit you with spears, and save you a lot of time searching for a young white branch instead.

1 – Fire Gem

Dark Souls 3 - Fire Gem

The undisputed winner is the Fire Gem. Not exactly meta, you can use the other ones and still do good for yourself early on, but our recommendation is the Fire Gem. It’s used to upgrade your weapon, adding fire damage to it. So, it’s already more useful than the firebombs in that regard, as you can use it several times (not only 5), helping you with the pus of men and dogs. This will also help you with the early-game levels, as you can choose other stats to focus, rather than trying to improve your damage. It also teaches new players the mechanics of infusion. Definitely the best burial gift in Dark Souls 3 by far.
