All about Gundham Tanaka in the Danganronpa universe

Gundham Tanaka is a character featured in Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, with appearances in Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope’s Peak High School as well. He plays an important role in the game, as he possesses the title of “the Ultimate Breeder” in the Animal Breeding Committee. This is the highest merit awarded to students who have specialized in a specific subject at Hope’s Peak Academy.



He, along with his class mates from class 77-B, were brainwashed to join a terrorist organization called The Ultimate Despair, lead by Junko Enoshima. This triggered a series of events leading the academy up to the infamous big tragedy. In the Danganronpa universe, this event is known as the most memorable and horrific act of violence and death in the series. Gundham Tanaka becomes the main weapon on the organization, spreading chaos and destruction.

The Future Foundation, an organization formed by students of the academy, then apprehended Gundham Tanaka for his rehabilitation. Due to the confrontations, and the efforts to reinstate order by the organization, the character was left in some sort of a coma state. The Future Foundation, along with the Hope’s Peak Academy started the Neo World Program. With this, they planned to remove all the memories of being part of the Ultimate Despair from Gundham Tanaka’s brain, and all other members prisoned by them.

After awakening, Gundhama and all former members of the Ultimate Despair, now with a new perspective and clarity of what happened, helped to completely eradicate the evil established by them and prevent new attempts for new recruitments.

Personality

Gundham Tanaka is a somewhat eccentric and dark character. Many would say that he has delusions of grandeur from his claims that he was granted evil powers from the underworld. He can be heard at times bragging about his merits as the “Supreme Overlord of Ice”, referring to other people as “pathetic human beings”, and that even the gods fear his power.

The introduction of this character is a bit bland. The series gives a comical twist to the lines of dialogue, making fun of conversations with other characters, never missing the opportunity to emphasize his remarkable effort to share his time with mere mortals. Gundham Tanaka can’t help but feel lonely and alienated from society.

Gundham Tanaka

Gundham Tanaka’s character is socially awkward at his highest level. He says that he has always avoided physical contact with other people since childhood, which he takes to such exaggerated extents as never having played sports to avoid being touched by others. Sonia’s compliments make him blush, but this puts him in a completely unmanageable situation for him. He always tries to mitigate the effect of his reaction by putting a scarf on the lower part of his face to cover his shame.

Equally well recognizable in Gundham Tanaka’s personality is the fact that he has suffered many disappointments and has little or no expectation of other people. However, despite being antisocial, he possesses a genuine and deep love for animals. He sometimes calls them his “evil minions”, but despite that he cares about taking looking after and protecting them.

His love for nature and in turn his hatred for the malicious and self-serving ways of humanity make him a character with an interesting contribution to the history of the game. He is very clear about the rules of nature and incredibly recognizes that they can be harsh and ruthless at times.

Gundham Tanaka the Ultimate Breeder

Gundham is considerably more affectionate with animals than with people. However, he tries to contain his emotions and not become too fond of animals, especially if they are raised to satisfy the need for food. He also alleges that everything that “talks” is capable of betraying you, referring to his preference to be among animals instead of around people.

This character is considered the “Ultimate Breeder” for all his efforts saving endangered species, creating research studies to document all aspects of animal life and his fantastic discoveries and achievements in the area of hybridizing breeds.

Likewise, the character has a special ability to tame wild animals. He begins by speaking in a low and gentle voice to gain the animal’s trust, approaching slowly. Gundham Tanaka says that he can talk to animals once he has tamed them.

His pets

This character’s favorite animals are his beloved hamsters, whom he calls the “Four Dark Devas of Destruction.” He always has his “cursed arm” with bandages to avoid being bitten by his pets, which he has well trained. The orange and white is called San-D, Jum-P is the grey and white one, Maga-Z is the tan with flesh color belly, and Cham-P the fat one.

The death of Gundham Tanaka

A stampede of animals on a beach, led by Monokuma running frenzied in the direction of Gundham. Everything seemed to indicate that the character had some kind of plan. He put his hamster pets aside, where he knew nothing would hurt them and looked at the procession of animals coming towards him.

He took out a stick and drew a magic emblem on the ground, but this had no effect. Ultimately Gundham was overrun by the stampede. He showed a smiling face at his pets, who were next to where the event happened. Angels of animals transport his body in his last goodbye.
