Chinese tech giant Tencent has patented a portable console inspired by the Nintendo Switch but allegedly focused on running PC games. Technology companies have patented a multitude of devices over the years, in projects that although most never see the light of day, they serve to safeguard future launches.

Also sometimes, patents are the prelude to an announcement, and now the Chinese technology giant Tencent seems to be interested in the video game market, and more so now that in China there is a large sector to conquer and where Nintendo Switch is selling especially well.

As analyst Daniel Ahmad from Niko Partners anticipates, last October Tencent registered a patent for a “PC console”, and from what you see in the first images it is inspired by Nintendo Switch, although there are a number of very important remarkable changes.

On the contrary, the controls cannot be detached from the screen, so perhaps the main similarity with Nintendo Switch disappears, and on the other hand, we see one button dedicated to Windows on the front panel. If it goes on sale, it is clear that it would focus on running PC games.

Thanks to the filtered images, we can see that in the lower area of the body of the system we observe the existence of a USB type C port, but also an HDMI port to connect it to a television or a monitor. Obviously it also has a USB connector for other purposes, such as connecting an external hard drive.

Tencent Console

So far they are all speculations, but many launches of portable consoles of these characteristics have already been seen in China that are only sold in that location and that have not succeeded outside those boundaries.

It is risky that Tencent enters a market as complicated the video games industry, and more so in direct competition with Nintendo, which has dominated the portable console niche for decades.

Interestingly, Tencent distributes Nintendo Switch in Chinese territory, so they could have been perfectly inspired by the Nintendo console to dare in the future with a portable launch of these characteristics.
