Historically the battle for the dominance of the computer processor market is defined only by 2 names: Intel versus AMD. When facing the decision to buy a new CPU for your desktop computer it should only rely on what your expectations are. For this question, there is only one straight answer: AMD. This company is outperforming Intel in more than 90% of the specs they can potentially do. With their new line of processors the AMD Ryzen 5000 series they stablished a new standard in the market and crowned themselves as winners for the next year.

For Intel, things are not running so smoothly. It seems like the company has been hiding under a rock for the past 3 years. On the Intel Core i9 10900K processor, one of their latest, the most amount of cores is 10. However, the competition is currently producing 16 core processors in the 7 nanometers range. Apparently Intel wasn’t going to transition from its 14NM architecture down to 7. According to a new Intel’s product launch announcement, it is.

Intel announced its newer product: The Rocket Lake. The company’s new offering, the Intel Core i9 11900K has 8 cores and 16 threads, 2 cores less than its previous model. Additionally, equipped with 5.3GHz peak boost speed, DDR4 up to 3200 and PCI express up to 20 lanes. In the CES event this year the company claimed to beat AMDs Ryzen 5900 CPU in gaming benchmarks. However, this was an in-house test report and everything looks like they weren’t telling the whole story.

On the other hand, as we mentioned earlier, our best bet for desktop CPU is the new AMD Ryzen 5000 series. Based on AMDs Zen 3 architecture, the top of the 4 processors in the lineup comes with 16 cores and 32 threads. Additionally, comes with 64MB L3 cache, up to 4.9GHz clock speed, DDR4 memory up to 3200 and PCIe 4.0 connection. This CPU runs smoothly using single thread tasks like design creative work. Similarly, it also gives wonderful results while dealing with multi threaded loads like 3d modelling and rendering.

What is happening with Intel

It seems like Intel is having a hard time to keep up the pace. Early this month, the CEO of the company Bob Swan announced his resignation, to be effective on February 15. Pat Gelsinger, former VMware CEO, will take his place. Gelsinger had previously worked for Intel for around 30 years and has a way better knowledge of the market than its predecesor. Things are a little bit shaky around Intel’s offices.

It was a bitter taste for the company to see their new version of processor benchmarks be crushed by its own previous model, the Intel Core i9 10900K. Both CPUs were clocked at 5.2GHz and matched exactly the same specs of hardware. The results of this test was a slightly difference in single thread performance between 11 to 16%. In turn, on all other tests, including multi-thread and gaming performance, the Intel Core i9 10th gen was superior than the 11th gen.

The Intel Core i9 11900K was announced for release on Q1 this year. However there was another announcement that shooked the senses of Intel’s fan base. AMD is not necessarily walking on sunshine right now. Currently they are dealing with supply issues due to the massive demand on their new Ryzen 5000 series. Above this, due to the pandemic, new tariffs are being applied to the company for distribution. Consequently, this factor will lead to a slight price increase on all the product lineup.

Lisa Sue, the AMD’s CEO claimed that they will be able to catch up with production and demand by the half of the year. In terms of availability and price only time will tell how convenient putting our hands on a Ryzen 9 CPU would be like. However, the AMD Ryzen 5000 series has officially become the best desktop CPU 2021.
